What happened on Necker?

This week our nine V Marks The Spot finalists and their partners were flown to the British Virgin Islands for the trip of a lifetime – and a chance to win our star prize of a ‘life more Virgin’! All they had to do was complete a series of mini challenges on Necker Island and be the first to find the golden coin that would mark them as the winner.

Here’s who took part:

1) #TeamDebbie – Debbie and Mick (who won their place through Virgin Games)

2) #TeamHelen – Helen and Louise (who won their place at our launch event)

3) #TeamBecki – Becki and Hannah (who won their place through Virgin Trains)

4) #TeamAdam – Adam and Amanda (who won their place on the app)

5) #TeamAlice – Alice and Nick (who won their place on the app)

6) #TeamClare – Clare and Lisa (who won their place through Virgin Holidays)

7) #TeamAlasdair – Alasdair and Julie (who won their place on the app)

8) #TeamNatalie – Natalie and Daniel (who won their place through the video prize draw)

9) #TeamErnest – Ernest and Helen (who won their place on the app)

Our teams set sail from Moskito Island where they’d been staying to Necker Island to find out what we had in store for them!

Everyone - avast!

The first task…

WhatsApp Image 2016-08-18 at 16.18.21To begin with, our buccaneering treasure hunters could choose between doing a Sudoko challenge or walking the plank. Well, not quite a plank, a slack line over a pool.

The second task…

One (rather unlucky) member of Necker Island staff was dressed in a Sumo suit and our finalists had to hit him with three tennis balls to pass the challenge. A few of them were regretting passing up on the opportunity to practise their tennis skills with a coach the day before!

The third task…

Over on the beach volleyball court we’d laid 100 red cups upside down. There were 9 sharks hidden under the cups. Our finalists had to pick up and replace each cup until they found a shark. If they found a ‘Red Road Block’ under a cup, they had to stand on 1 leg for 30 seconds or spin around 10 times before they could continue.

The fourth task…

Our finalists had to find a piece of paper with a clue on it. The clue was written in a code they had to crack. Once they cracked the code, it would tell them where they had to go next.

The fifth task…

One member of each team had to put on a Velcro suit and stick to the Velcro wall for at least 5 seconds while having tennis balls thrown at them. A rather sticky situation to be in!

The sixth task…

Our finalists now had the choice between two tasks! They could either:

a) Correctly guess the capital cities of each country marked out on a blank map. Or…

b) Correctly identify at least 9 out of 10 shots on the bar.

Plenty of late night drinking with the team behind the bar on the island had prepped our competitors for this challenge. The chocolate syrup shot was nicer than most though!

The seventh task…

This challenge involved tossing at least four bean bags into the hole before you were able to move on to the next challenge. (Probably a little easier if you chose to guess the capital cities of the world instead of doing 10 shots.)

The eighth task…

This was probably the most challenging task of all. Our finalists were given a choice. They could either:

a) Complete an obstacle course involving wheelbarrow races, piggy backs, and running with flippers on. Or…

b) Solve a Rubix cube.

Everyone went for the obstacle course – even though running around in Necker Island heat was quite a challenge!

The ninth task…

Our finalists had to retrieve a conch shell from the bottom of the swimming pool area. Some of our finalists were nearly scuppered by how hard it was to find the shells in Richard’s pool. Although we have a sneaky suspicion some were just staying in there to cool off!

The final task…

A wooden V marked the spot where we’d hidden a golden coin in the sand. Our finalists and their partners just had to find it. The first team to find the coin wins!

And the winner is…

We’re pleased to announce that #TeamClare and Lisa won our V Marks The Spot hunt! Shortly after finding her coin, Richard Branson presented her with her prize. You can watch the moment she found out what her prize included below…

And here’s what she won!

Of course, after all that hard work and running around, our finalists deserved a chance to cool off. A few drinks in the pool followed by lunch with Richard was the perfect way to round off the hunt, not to mention a little party back on Moskito Island later that night to celebrate!
